You are now driving past Whakaki Lakes and Wetlands. This area is 577 hectares and is made up of sand dunes, swamp areas and lakes. This stretch of land used to be home to Maori villages that relied on the sea and wetlands for food, education and physical well being. The lakes were formed more than 4000 years ago and originally were part of a wetland stretching from Opoho to Waitai Valley. Because of drainage channels, the wetlands separated from one another and what remains is said to be only 10% of the original wetlands.
