You are now approaching Fyffe House and the original site of the Pier Hotel coming up on the right hand side. Fyffe house is the oldest home in Kaikoura and is a colonial whaler’s cottage. The earliest part of the house is the single story wing which Robert Fyffe built for the cooper who made barrels for storing whale oil. After Robert drowned, his cousin George took over and built the rest of the house in 2 stages. The house is mostly in its original condition and is open to the public. Just in front of the house are the foundations of the Pier hotel which was built in 1885, and the wharf store buildings. When the new wharf was built in 1909 the hotel was moved to its current site.
