You are now approaching the Weka Pass Railway coming up on the left/right. The historic rural railway uses both vintage steam and diesel electric locomotives. This railway is completely a volunteer effort and everyone involved does their best to preserve the heritage of the New Zealand railway. The start of the railway cuts across farmland then passes through a large reservoir and vineyards before climbing a steep path through the pass. Spare a thought for the workers who built this railway during the 1800s. They would have had to move clay and limestone by hand to create space for the track. It was completed in about 2 years and you might see old fossils and shells in the walls of the railway cuttings.
