Coming up in Whakapapa village is the Department of Conservation where visitors can pay their respects to the wisdom of Horonuku, Te Heuheu Tukino IV, the paramount chief of the Ngati Tuwharetoa. A man of great foresight, he did not want the sacred mountains of his people divided into blocks and sold to settlers, and so gifted the peaks of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and part of Ruapehu to the people of New Zealand in September, 1887. In doing so, Tongariro National Park become the first national park in NZ, and the fourth national park in the world at that time.
