Coming up is a bridge crossing the Whangaehu River. This well known body of water was responsible for the death of 151 people in 1953. They died in a tragic train disaster when a lahar, or violent discharge of water and mud, roared down the river from Mt Ruapehu’s precariously balanced crater lake. The lake makes Mt Ruapehu the riskiest mountain in the Tongariro National Park and its past eruptions, like those experienced in the mid 1990s, dumped metres of ash at the top of the Whangaehu River, creating an unstable dam. Fortunately when the crater lake burst its banks in March 2007, an alarm system provided warning before a torrent of mud and debris again poured through this river gorge.
