Coming up is the renowned fly fishing township of Turangi and whilst it is not a compulsory activity, you’d be mad not to try your hand at angling for the rainbow and brown trout that thrive in these parts. Guides, who are skilled at providing a memorable fishing experience to all clientele, can introduce novices to the intricacies of the fine art of fly fishing and provide an insider’s guide for seasoned fisherfolk wishing to find the best spots to cast their line. Dedicated anglers can stalk trophy browns and rainbows with dry flies during the summer months and pursue spawning runs of rainbow trout upstream with nymphs. Helicopter- and raft-fishing in remote high-country streams provide further opportunities to fish for trophy trout and while it’s strictly catch and release on the rivers and streams, fish caught in Lake Taupo are considered fair game for the barbeque. Smoked trout is often on the menu in these parts however as it is illegal to sell trout in New Zealand, you will have to catch your own!
