Coming up is the township of Ohakune and the Ohakune Mountain Road, which leads to the ski field and is open year round. The road, originally built by Joey Blyth and a team of committed locals who wanted to develop access to the snowfields and forest above Ohakune, was opened in 1963 after a lot of fundraising and work by volunteers. Rising 1000 metres from the town to the ski field, this is an incredible scenic drive winding through dense mountain beech forest to the tree line, where the beech becomes bonsai-like, twisting into dwarf-like shrubs, before giving way to alpine plants.
