You are approaching Mount Tauhara. The mountain is a dormant volcano and a prominent landmark in the Taupo township. It is often referred to as the “The Lady of the Lake” or the “Pregnant Lady” because of its silhouette when looking at it from the west. The mountain was formed 65,000 years ago and in Maori its name means, “slow mover,” aptly named because of the slow moving lava. If you have any questions about walking trails in the area, please visit the I-Site Visitor Information Center.
