You are approaching the Raurimu Spiral Lookout, one of New Zealand’s greatest engineering accomplishments. The spiral is famous because it keeps the railway gradient while rising 220 meters from the valley to the Waimarino Plain and this was certainly an incredible accomplishment in the early 1900’s. During the same time construction within the town of Raurimu had begun and had a population of 1500 people. Some of the original houses built during that time still stand to this day
