Coming up is the turn-off to Te Porere Redoubt where a track leads to earthwork fortifications built by Maori prophet, Te Kooti and his followers during the New Zealand Wars in their last stand against Government troops in 1869. Te Kooti was exiled to the Chatham Islands, hundreds of kilometres off the east coast of the North Island – but that wasn’t to be the end of him. He masterminded a daring escape back to the mainland and, believing God had appeared to him and promised he would save the Maori as he had saved the Jews, founded a religious movement which still exists, called Ringatu (“The Upraised Hand”). The government sent an army in pursuit, but Te Kooti proved a formidable enemy. He was eventually pardoned in his old age and allowed to live with his followers in the King Country.
