Coming up on the left/right is the historic site for the Wairau Affray of 1843 and the Titoki Tree. The site marks where a conflict between the early settlers and the Maori took place. The Titoki tree is estimated to be about 180 years old and the Maori once tied their canoe up here so they could paddle across the water. The stream that runs along here is the Tuamarina and the spot where the stream emerges from the hill is where a gunfight between the Maori and European settlers broke out in 1843. 7 people were killed and more died on the slopes later on.
