Coming up ahead is the Awatere Valley. Mount Tapuae-o Venuku is the highest peak in the valley and is the first place where Sir Edmund Hillary did a mountain climb. The valley is made up of farmland and rolling hills and is a traditional sheep farming region. More recently vineyards have been planted along the Awatere River which means you can treat yourself to a wine tasting at the various wineries. The district is known for its hospitality and there is some fantastic farm stay accommodation on offer. Beautiful and lush gardens are another feature of the valley and they are all open to the public.
