Coming up on the left is the Abel Tasman Memorial. Abel Tasman was a Dutch navigator who first sighted New Zealand in 1642. You can reach the memorial via an easy walking track and it’s about a 5 minute walk. The memorial stands on a limestone outcrop over the sea and there is a viewing platform next to it. The memorial was built in 1942 to mark the 100th anniversary of Tasman’s visit and it was later reopened by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1992. Bring a camera; the photo opportunities from the lookout are endless.
