Coming up on the left is the Golden Bay Museum and Gallery. The museum features giant carnivorous snail shells, unique European and Maori artifacts, model ships and a photo journey of Abel Tasman’s 1642 journey. There is also a reference library and archives which can be accessed by appointment. The gallery is found in the historic Takaka post office building and specializes in regional arts and crafts. You will see paintings, fabric art, prints and cards made by various New Zealand artists along with pottery, jewellery and woodcraft. Gifts are on sale if you want to take a souvenir home. Displays and exhibitions in the gallery are constantly changing giving visitors variety each time they visit.
