Coming up on the right is the turnoff for the Abel Tasman National Park. If you continue towards Takaka you will notice Takaka Hill, a range of hills made of marble. Weather conditions over the years have shaped these hills into strange formations and have created many sinkholes. Takaka Hill is known for its marble quarry and the various caves which can be explored in the area. The Ngarua Caves for example are open to the public and feature deposits of moa bones. Harwood’s Hole is the deepest cave in New Zealand and is also found at Takaka Hill. Many scenes for the Lord of the Rings trilogy were filmed in the immediate area.
