Coming up on the left/right is the turnoff for Lake Rotoiti and the Gowan Valley. The Gowan Valley Road follows the river from where it meets the Buller River to its source which is found in Rotorua. The Gowan River is a wild one and should be treated with caution. It’s one of the toughest rivers in New Zealand which makes any fishing in it a challenge and is not recommended for anyone who isn’t an experienced angler. For those who can handle it and are patient enough, there is plenty of trout to be caught.
