Coming upis the Ngarua Cave. The cave was discovered by the indigenous people when they were clearing the hillside after a bushfire broke out. Early settlers then began visiting the cave on horseback. The cave was shut for a few years after it was discovered that visitors were damaging the stalactites and writing their name on the rock. The cave now has a second entrance which allows for one way tours of the 450 million year old rock. The part of Takaka Hill where the cave is found is also called Marble Mountain. Marble which was quarried near the cave was used to build Parliament buildings and the Nelson cathedral.
