You are now approaching the town of Ahipara and Shipwreck Bay. The name Ahipara means Sacred Fire and it gets this name from an ancient fire that was continuously burnt for the village on the spot where the school is located. Ahipara is in the tribal area of the Te Rarawa people, and descendents of the waka Tinana brought the first people from the Pacific to this spot. Close by to Ahipara is Shipwreck Bay, where many ships have sunk over the years and some are still visible during low tide.
