Coming up on your left/right is the town of Horeke and the Wairere Boulders Nature Park. The town was originally called Deptford after the Royal Navy in England. It was also one of the first places that was settled by the Europeans when a shipyard was established in the late 1820’s. The Horeke Hotel was also the first pub ever built in New Zealand. Located near the town is the Wairere Boulders Nature Park. At the park there are thousands of boulders that are stacked on top of each other and some of them are over 30 meters high. They look like a stream of rocks and boulders that are flowing down towards the Hokianga Harbour.
