Coming up is the Mangawhai museum &Smashed Pipi Gallery & Café. The Museums pays tribute to the region’s ship building history. Kauri timber and its gum were also dug and milled over a wide area here in the late 1800s when Mangawhai was a supply town boasting a hotel, butchers shop, bakery, saddler, billiard saloon, grocery stores, post office, two churches and a gumstore. Remnants of the gum digging days can be seen as well as an impressive collection of early photography and exhibits from the colonial era. The Smashed Pipi Gallery and Café features a distinctive collection of New Zealand artworks including sculptured fish, palms, shells and boats to tubular vases and mosaics. The works of many well known New Zealand artists are featured here including Barabara Hockenhul, Tony Sly, Vivian Keenan, Keith Blight and Andrew Van der Puten.
