You are now approaching the town of Mangonui. During the early 1800’s, Mangonui was known as a very successful haven for whalers. The township then grew as a trading port where kauri logs were milled and prepared for export. By the 1860’s, Mangonui was the administrative center for the far north. Today, Mangonui’s reputation as a fishing community attracts hundreds of people and the fish and chips here is considered some of the best in New Zealand. The waterfront area is also a great area to go look at because of several historic buildings.
