Coming up is Opo dolphin statue and grave. This statue commemorates a dolphin, affectionately known as Opo, who used to live in the harbour in 1955 and 1956. She would spend days playing with the locals and tourists and eventually became so tame that children could ride her back. She became a mascot for the town and the New Zealand Government passed a law to protect her, however, in 1956 her body was found washed up on the rocks. A statue and gravesite outside the South Hokianga Memorial Hall still draws people to hear her legendary story.
