You are now approaching the towns of Opononi and Omapere. The two towns join at the Bowling Green and Show Grounds where the Axeman Carvinal has been held each year on the 1st of January for the last 100 years. Opononi was made famous by “Opo the Friendly Dolphin” during the summers of 1955 and 1956. The dolphin would often play with locals and visitors and thousands came to the area to catch a glimpse of the dolphin. The New Zealand government even passed a law to protect the dolphin but unfortunately in 1956, it was found washed up dead on the rocks. There is a statue in Opononi that pays homage to the dolphin.
