Coming up is the Opononi wharf where the Hokianga Express water taxi provides rides across the harbour to the enormous dunes of the northern Hokianga where you can hire boards and plunge down steep slopes. Alternatively there amongst the dunes there are sand sculptures, canyons, springs and waterfalls to explore. Old Maori middens abound and gizzard stones are often found, which provide evidence that moa roamed the dunes in the past. You will also see the Opo dolphin statue and grave. This statue commemorates a dolphin, affectionately known as Opo, who used to live in the harbour in 1955 and 1956. She would spend days playing with the locals and tourists and eventually became so tame that children could ride her back. She became a mascot for the town and the New Zealand Government passed a law to protect her, however, in 1956 her body was found washed up on the rocks.
