You are now approaching the turn-off to Rawene, where many of town’s buildings hang over the waterline, their foundation posts buried firmly in the sand. The village is boarding point for the Hokianga Harbour Vehicular Ferry, and home to several noteworthy buildings: the old courthouse and gaol, the Masonic Hotel, Clendon House, The Ferry House and several old churches. The police station is also of note for it was there in 1898, that the Mahurehure hapu of the Ngapuhi refused to pay dog tax, marking New Zealand’s last armed conflict.
