You are now approaching the town of Rawene and the Hokianga Harbour Ferry. The town lies on the south of the Hokianga harbour and the car ferry connects it to Kohukohu and northern Hokianga. Rawene started off as a timber center during the 19th century with mills and a shipyard. James Reddy Clendon who was previously the United States Consul to New Zealand, settled in this area in 1862 and served as a local magistrate. His house is still stands and it is a museum open to the public. Also Rewene was declared a special health area in the 1940’s. This meant that all consultations, pharmaceuticals, investigations and hospital admissions were free.
