Soon you will begin to travel alongside the Aupouri Forest, which runs parallel to Ninety Mile Beach. The 29,000 hectare pine forest was originally established to secure the regions drifting sands. To plant out the original forest, the dunes were first anchored with grass, then yellow lupins, followed by young trees. Today the forest not only secures the land but is also a profitable timber forest.
