You are now about to begin the 104 kilometre journey travelling up the Aupouri Peninsula, a narrow spit of land you will find in a relatively raw state. A mere 12.5 percent of its total mass is freehold with the remainder being either public land, managed by the Department of Conservation; privately owned land belonging to local Maori; or State Forest. The peninsula is of great spiritual significance to Maori, as it is believed it is the pathway to the afterlife.
