You are now approaching the Cape Reinga well known for its landmark lighthouse built in 1941. The lighthouse perches atop a steep headland above the often- tumultuous meeting point of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. Cape Reinga also offers dramatic views of Te Werahi Beach and Cape Maria van Diemen to the west and on a clear day the Three Kings Islands, named by Abel Tasman in 1643, can be seen on the horizon to the north.
