You’re approaching the turnoff into the car park of the Hone Heke Monument and Lookout. This monument was erected in 1911 to honour the widely respected politician, Hone Heke. Hone Heke was the MP for Northern Maori and lived in Kaikohe his entire life, a village which was once ruled by Hone Heke’s great uncle, a warrior Maori chief of the same name. This location also offers stunning views of the surrounding valley and is a great picture opportunity.
