Coming up on your right is the turn-off to Houhora Heads where a café and campground in the best of Kiwi tradition, takes prime position on the water beneath Mt Camel’s brooding gaze. Nearby is the Subritsky Homestead, built to last by a Polish settler in 1860 with kauri floorboards, walls of rock and wood, and plaster made from powdered seashells. Beyond this turnoff on your left is the turn-off to Hukatere where a high hill provides a fine view of Te-oneroa-o-tohe, otherwise known as Ninety Mile Beach. This magnificent unbroken arch of white sand is flanked by the Aupouri Forest where bands of fine-looking wild horses roam. It’s claimed the horses are the offspring of thoroughbreds that escaped a ship, wrecked off Cape Maria Van Diemen, and have bred here ever since.
