Soon you will begin to see views to the east of the Parengarenga Harbour and Kokota Spit, a shimmering and brilliantly white sandspit located at the harbour entrance. The spit contains some of the world’s purest silica sand, an ingredient used to make glass. It is also the last landfall for migratory godwits who gather here in early March, turning the spit almost black as their numbers grow, before they begin their long migration to Siberia and Alaska.
