Coming up is the turnoff to Omapere Lookout. From the lookout you can clearly see the dunes of the northern Hokianga, where it is said that the great Maori adventurer and explorer Kupe departed New Zealand, after quenching his thirst from a spring and saying: “Hei konei ra Te puna I te ao Marama, Ka hoki nei tenei, e kore ano e hoki anga nui”, meaning “Goodbye spring in the land of light, this one is going home and will not return this way again.” Later the great chiefs Rua nui and Nukutawhiti split the lands north and south of the Hokianga – Rua Nui taking the south side and Nukutawhiti the lands to the north.
