The dramatic isles to the east that make up the Poor Knights group were formed around 10 million years ago when a series of violent eruptions created a large land mass off New Zealand’s north east coast. The ice age, along with the constant erosion by wind and winter has created the stunning landscape seen today. Separated from the mainland for over two million years, the predator-free islands are managed by the Department of Conservation and local iwi, and are home to a diverse range of unique flora and fauna.
