Coming up is the turn-off to Te Kopuru and Pouto, on the southernmost tip of the Kaipara Harbour’s North Head, and the site of New Zealand’s oldest wooden lighthouse erected in 1884. Timber for its construction was milled near Dargaville and shipped to Australia so that the structure could be prefabricated, only to be returned to Dargaville once more, and finally dragged by bullocks to Pouto for erection.
