Coming up is the turn-off for Ruapekapeka Pa Historic Reserve. Follow this for five kilometers you will reach the site where the last Battle of the North played out in 1846. A strong Redcoat force, determined to incarcerate Chief Kawiti and Hone Heke, captured this formidable fortress - somewhat unfairly on a Sunday when converted Maori were busy worshipping their new Christian god. The Pa is a nest of tunnels and trenches that are surrounded by a palisade. This is a site of international importance and visitors to the area can learn more about the battle and how it was fought.
