You are approaching the car park of the Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere walks. Five minutes along the walk youll find Tane Mahuta, a name which means Lord of the Forest, and is the biggest kauri tree still standing at 169 feet. A further fifteen minutes walk is Te Matua Ngahere, or the Father of the Forest. Although not as tall as Tane Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere is just as famous because it has a much bigger circumference of about fifty feet. Both trees are estimated to be about two thousand years old and are the oldest examples of kauri trees in the Waipoua Forest.
