Coming up is the small township of Te Kao where on its main street you will find an excellent example of a twin-towered Ratana Chuch, a Maori revivalist religion dating from the 1920s. The town’s heart is at its marae which features a beautifully carved entranceway, well worthy of a photo. The marae is adjacent to the Te Kao general store where huge ice creams are sold and best enjoyed on long benches outside , listening to the proprietor, Bonnie Conrad’s old-time music.
