Coming up is the turn-off to the tranquil harbour beaches of Church, Kowharewa and Pacific Bays. The road continues to the broad sweep of Whangaumu Beach, where a 20 minute hike at low tide leads back to Ngunguru. When Europeans first arrived here in the 1840s, local chiefs provided land for the first school. Word has it that the great chief Paratene Te Manu, was so interested in education that he sat in amongst the pupils.
