You are now entering Central Otago where the gleam of gold once attracted men here by the thousands. Many towns owe their origins to the goldrush, a time when prospectors swarmed inland, travelling from Dunedin on the Central Otago railway, and spread throughout the district from Ranfurly and Oturehua through to Alexandra, Clyde and beyond. Their arrival transformed the landscape and can still be seen today – keep an eye out for remnants of their cob, mudbrick and stone cottages, and discarded mining equipment as you travel along between Central Otago’s rocky tors, and sweet-scented fields of thyme…
