Coming up in Kyeburn Diggings is the Danseys Pass Coach Inn, a schist lodge built in 1862 by a man dubbed “Happy Bill”. For every boulder he shaped and laid Happy Bill was paid with a pint of beer. Gold was found in the area in 1863 and the township became a thriving community boasting three hotels and stores, plus a butcher’s shop and a bakery. As with many Central Otago towns today, all that remains is an ambient hotel set amongst a wealth of old gold mining relics.
