Coming up is the Hokonui Moonshine Museum which celebrates 130 years of illicit whiskey making. A local brew was introduced to the South by the wily widow McRae, who arrived in NZ with a clan of seven offspring in the 1870s. Unbeknown to Customs officials of the time, among the ‘household goods’ of these innocent-looking Scots-people was a time-honoured family recipe, plus a small copper and brass still. The rest is history for whiskey was the dram of choice for the Southern professional man, and the bane of regional law enforcement until the 1950s – a story that is well told at the museum.
