You are approaching the turnoff to Matanaka Historic Farm Buildings. Dating back to the 1840s, these are the oldest surviving farm buildings in New Zealand. They include a stable, storehouse, granary, schoolhouse and privy, built for well-known whaler and trader Johnny Jones. He bought a whaling station in 1838, but when the whaling industry began to suffer he established a farm at Matanaka in 1843 and became one of Dunedin's leading merchants. Situated in a spectacular rural, coastal setting, Matanaka is a pleasant experience and a good stop for any visitor to the region.
