Coming up is the turn-off to Naseby, a town which promotes itself as being “2000 feet above worry level”. Naseby has a wealth of historic buildings to see, including several built from cob or mudbricks, as timber was scarce in the high country during the goldrush days. Some of these buildings are used as residences, while others are open to the public such as the Naseby Motoring Museum housed inside the old butcher’s shop, which has an impressive collection of Studebakers and motoring memorabilia. Naseby Forest provides excellent hiking and mountain biking – all gear can be hired – and outdoor ice skating is also a popular activity here during the winter months. Curling, an old Scottish game akin to bowls on ice, can be watched here from June through to August.
