Coming up is the turn-off to Ophir and the historic Ophir bridge, built in 1880 and one of the last surviving suspension bridges in Central Otago. Gold was discovered in Ophir in 1863 and the town once boasted several stores as well as a school, police station, courthouse, post office, cottage hospital and doctor. This pleasant side-trip will only add 10-15 minutes to your journey travelling via a loop road. It’s well worthwhile for not only will you cross the old suspension bridge, but also see the historic buildings lining its main street, all of which are in excellent order.
