Welcome to Papatowai! Papatowai is a small settlement in the Catlin’s district. There is a permanent population of approximately 30 people and most of the houses in the town are holiday homes. The population rises dramatically during the holiday seasons, particularly on New Year’s Day and Easter weekend. Papatowai is surrounded by native podocarp forests and there are numerous walks in the area to waterfalls and sand beaches. There is also a walk to an archaeological site where it is possible to view middens left by early Maori inhabitants. In the past, the bones of the extinct moa bird have also been found here.
