Coming up is the turn-off for St Bathans, a quaint gold mining town, well off the beaten track approximately 15 to 20 minutes drive away. The town has several attractions: a stunning blue lake formed by the miners in their quest for gold, the atmospheric Vulcan Hotel built in 1882 from sun dried bricks, and many other historical buildings including the old Bank of New South Wales Gold Office and Despatches, the old Post Office. An old shearer’s drink called a Dogs’ Nose, a mix of gin and ale is the specialty at the pub, and it may well be this that brings on sightings of the hotel’s renowned ghost!
