You are approaching the Waitaki dam PowerStation and lookout. This dam was the first in New Zealand to be built without diverting the natural river flow. It has been used by the PowerStation since 1934 to generate almost a fifth of the nation’s power. Here you will also find the Waitaki dam lookout, a beautiful location to appreciate the turquoise colour of the water and the dam’s construction.
