You are now following the route of the Central Otago Rail Trail, a 150 kilometre long route which once provided a reliable transport service from Dunedin to Central Otago’s gold field towns. It remained a popular mode of transport for both passengers and freight until the 1960s when the government of the time relaxed regulations protecting railways, allowing trucks to carry their loads for longer distances. When the restrictions were completely lifted in 1983, it signaled a new era for the Central Otago Railway line and the Department of Conservation redeveloped the route into a 150 kilometre long recreational Rail Trail suitable for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. The trail is free to use and you can start the journey in either direction, hiking just a small portion, or the whole trail.
