You are approaching Moeraki Boulders Scenic Reserve. The boulders have been the subject of legends and curiosity for many years. Almost perfectly spherical, with a circumference of up to 13 feet, the boulders are scattered along a 164 foot stretch of the beach. They are thought to have been formed on the sea bed about 60 million years ago as lime salts gradually accumulated around a hard core. Maori legend says that the boulders are food baskets that washed ashore from the wreck of the ancestor's canoe that made its epic journey to New Zealand from Hawaiiki.
